Technology that fits your people.

When your software is slow, fragile or doesn't talk to your other systems, your people pay for it every day. I've spent over two decades building and fixing business software. I'll help you work out what to build, what to fix, and what to leave alone, then I will deliver it.

Software development

With over two decades of experience, I have a lot to lean on, and AI has only made me more efficient.

  • Custom apps – small applications with big impact
  • Integrations – design/implement data flows between systems
  • Migrations – important legacy applications made available in new ways

Experience

  1. Software Consultant Independent

I work directly with mid-size companies and non-profits in southern Wisconsin, mostly in .NET, Angular and SQL Server, with a lot of third-party integrations. You work with me from the first conversation through delivery.

    • Rewrote the SAP integration API for a lighting manufacturer. Every manufacturing department depends on it, across plants in several states and one in Europe. It moved from an aging .NET Framework app on a costly Windows server to .NET 10 on the company's Kubernetes cluster. The old API went down about once a quarter. The new one hasn't had an unscheduled outage since it went live in late 2025.
    • Helped a community health non-profit replace donor software that was expensive, poorly supported and missing tools they needed. I gathered their requirements and compared several SaaS options with clear trade-offs. I also gave them a plan for vendor demos and the questions to ask, so they could choose with confidence.
  2. Engineering Manager & Software Engineer Full-time, contract and consulting roles

A mix of full-time, contract and consulting work in financial services and healthcare services, some of it leading teams and some hands-on in the code. As a manager, I led a team of five: setting priorities, developing the people on the team, and working with business leaders to turn what they needed into software that shipped. As an engineer, I got productive quickly in unfamiliar codebases and businesses, and delivered within each team's standards and processes. I also mentored junior developers through an online training program, and I volunteered with the Friends of the Watertown Public Library, where I managed their website and helped their leadership get more out of Microsoft tools.

  3. Software Engineer / Manager Trek Bicycle

Built and supported the software Trek's bike shop dealers ran their business on: point of sale, inventory and CRM across multiple locations, with centralized reporting and supplier integration. In 2016 I moved from building it to leading the team behind it.

    • Designed the move of the system off a costly on-prem host in the eastern US and onto Azure, with regional deployments starting in the US and Europe in 2016. Infrastructure stopped being the limit on expansion: the system grew from 4 countries to 16, including Japan, Korea and Australia, and the new data platform made room for better dealer e-commerce and reporting.
    • Grew the team from 7 people to about 20, hiring full-time and contract developers, adding offshore developers in India, and taking on the QA team. I managed the operating budget for the team and its systems. At the peak, I split the team into focused groups for globalization, new features and fixes, and rotated people through them so everyone could grow into new areas.
  4. Software Engineer API Healthcare

Started my career building workforce management software used by hospitals and health systems, such as scheduling, time and attendance, and staffing, in ASP.NET MVC, C#, jQuery and SQL Server. I worked alongside senior developers who taught me what it takes to write software people depend on every day. I became the one who took on the frustrating problems, treated them as mysteries to be solved, and solved a lot of them.

    • Tracked down why the desktop scheduling app crashed or slowed to a crawl for the largest hospital clients and anyone who kept it open for long stretches. Over a couple of months of memory profiling, I found and fixed the leaks, then virtualized the schedule grid so rows were only built as they scrolled into view. The app stopped crashing and scrolling became smooth, even on the biggest schedules.
